FROM OSIJEK TO THREE COUNTRIES

28.09.2022.

Start your adventure in the heart of Slavonia and Baranja - the amazing city of Osijek! After walking through the greenest city in Croatia, through the 17 parks that adorn the city and along the defensive walls of the historic old town Tvrđa, and through an art nouveau walk with monumental private and public palaces. Having experienced the modern wonder of the city with the coexistence of the old, having a great time, you may feel ready to continue your journey through the golden fields of Slavonia.

Whether you want to explore continental Croatia, i'ts sunny golden fields, green hills, i'ts rivers and lakes. But do not think that the unique landscape is the only advantage of this part of Croatia, there are also medieval castles and fortresses of famous noble families that will take you on a historical journey.

Osijek as your perfect starting point!

For example, the capital city Zagreb is about 300 km away, Budapest in the north is just over 250 km, Novi Sad in the east is about 100 km away, while southern cities such as Sarajevo and Mostar are just over 250 km away, or 400 km.

Reaching these destinations depends entirely on your budget and affinity. Of course, the cheapest thing would be to ask for a ride from your Croatian friend, if you have one. You can also hitchhike, but it can be time consuming and exhausting.

When planning a trip, also consider public transport, such as buses, trains, planes. They are generally a reliable choice and will allow you alternative transportation in case of unforeseen circumstances. You can also rent a car for more freedom, especially if you are traveling in a group.

HUNGARY

When you go from Osijek to north, to the Republic of Hungary, do not forget about the hidden treasures of Hungary, one unusual pig, fuzzy as a sheep. This is a pig whose meat is of outstanding quality and all top chefs and gourmets can agree with this. Do not brainstorm too much where to go and what to see, this is due to Erno Rubik, the man who presented us with the most famous brain teaser in the world – the Rubik's Cube. Natural sights include Lake Balaton the "inland sea" of Hungary, which is an inevitable destination for the summer heat of either tourists or locals. Visit the beautiful two cities in the junction of one – Buda and Pest, present-day Budapest, full of historical sights and stories. Don't forget to walk along the promenade along the Danube River, with beautiful views of Budapest's numerous bridges and the Hungarian Parliament, which incorporates as much as 40 kg of gold. For refreshment, visit the oldest and at the same time the largest indoor market in Europe. And for shopping enthusiasts, Vaci Street is an inevitable destination.

BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA

If you are heading south to Bosnia and Herzegovina, a country whose nickname is "heart-shaped country", because its shape resembles a heart, do not forget about the main symbol and identity of the state, the traditional folk "Bosnian coffee" which also represents a reflection of the gourmet mentality of the Croatian people. Bosnia and Herzegovina is a country divided into three nations, and throughout its size it is possible to experience the traditions and culture of these nations. Did you know that Bosnia has one of the last preserved rainforests in Europe called "Perućica", besides the fact that here is the last preserved rainforest of Europe, there is also the only pyramid of Europe "Pyramid of the Sun". Perhaps Bosnia and Herzegovina does not have much of its own sea, but that is why, back in the days, in the areas of the coldest river the Neretva River, there were Neretva pirates, who had long been the fear and trembling of the Adriatic Sea, and in honor of them, every year, on the second Saturday in August, a "Boat Marathon" is driven on the Neretva River. We come to the most interesting city, which is Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and also the first city in Europe that had a full electric tram line. Sarajevo's Sahat Tower is also thought to be the only public clock in the world to go on lunar time. While you are in Sarajevo, do not forget about the famous Bašćaršija i.e. Sarajevo's old charm, the historical and cultural centre of the city. Take a walk along the main promenade and shopping street Ferhadija, where you will find the "Sarajevo Rose", the traces of mines that fell on Sarajevo during the siege of the city, and later these tracks were filled with red wax and today they stand in a memory for the suffering of the city.

SERBIA

When you head east, you come to the Republic of Serbia, a country where the watchmaking industry has evolved before it evolved in Switzerland, and to this day Serbia still owns a watch that is 200 years older than the one in Switzerland, the famous "Land of Clocks". In Serbia, there is a river they call "The Year", but i'ts real name is the River Vrelo, and it got i'ts nickname because of i'ts length, which is exactly 365 meters long. Did you know that the word "vampire" is the only Serbian word that has been accepted and used throughout planet Earth. Another interesting fact is that Serbia has a Deliblate sandbox that was formed from sand applied by the wind, and is also the largest natural continental sandbox in Europe. And the town of Sjenica, also known as Serbian Siberia, holds the record as the coldest inhabited place in Europe. You come to the capital city of Serbia - Belgrade, a city with a rich history, unique atmosphere, with a combination of the incompatible, and it is also called the "City of Secrets". They may not accidentally call it a city of secrets, given that so far the city of Belgrade has changed its name as many as 14 times. Apparently, the first café in Europe opened in the capital city Belgrade, and they only offered black coffee. To walk down the longest street in Belgrade on King Alexander Boulevard, you need at least two and a half hours to walk through the crowds.

Now that you are already headed to your destination either north, south, east or west, you can see that Osijek is also a great destination to see different interesting things, whether historical or cultural, that are only a few kilometers drive from the city.
